Heidi Chain Declines Taxpayer Matching Funds

Asserts funds should be used to restore community services - not for politics

City Council Candidate Heidi Harrison Chain has decided to decline taxpayer public matching funds for her city council campaign. Chain believes the money should be used to better the community during these tough economic times. Chain said that in these times of hardship, "City funds should be used for our seniors, youth and other citizens - not for politics."

Chain, who is running for Councilwoman Melinda Katz's (D-Forest Hills) seat in the 29th Council District, had qualified for the maximum level of matching funds.

"The city is struggling," said Chain. "To me it was a choice between seniors getting services or money being used for politics, and the choice was clear. Under these circumstances, I could not in good conscience take money away from the people who need it most."

Chain plans to finance her campaign with contributions from supporters as well as her own funds.

"With the tremendous outpouring of support from the people of our district, I am confident that I will have sufficient funds for a successful campaign, without diverting needed public resources from our community," Chain said.
